The Barking Dog- A Restaurant Review

The other day was a beautiful breezy 80 degrees, and I really wanted to go have a nice cold beer on a patio somewhere with some good eats. My husband and I decided to try out The Barking Dog at Riverview in Norfolk, VA. Plenty of our friends have been talking about it and I thought it was time to try it out!

There isn’t much parking, but that is ok, the place isn’t very big. However, the patio is dog-friendly (hence the name of the restaurant) with water bowls and shade all around. The patio is the best place to dine, in my opinion, however, they have a bar that will seat about 10 people along with a few tables inside. They also have a completely screened in patio area, then the outside patio with picnic tables. It’s not just a place to eat, its a place to hang out- they have corn-hole, kids tables, kids games, and an overall relaxed, easy-going vibe.

We took a look at the menu and I knew instantly it was going to be hard to decide on what to order. The menu has hot dogs, sausages, burgers, and sandwiches. They also have daily specials on drinks, hot dogs, and burgers. We decided to order a few things to share and got some Happy Hour beers (Smart Mouth’s Sommer Fling Hefeweizen).

Everything was served in the red checkered paper boats with wax paper, a fun diner feel to the plating. Overall the buns weren’t that fancy, just plain ole store bought buns and the “Snap” dogs weren’t very big, they were a little lost in the toppings. I may try the Kosher ones next time.

Carolina Drive-In Dog: with chopped Carolina BBQ, Slaw, and Red Pepper Mayo.

Review: The Carolina dog has some unexpected heat to it from the vinegar based Carolina sauce on the BBQ along with the red pepper mayo. The slaw was flavorful with a hint of sweetness, counteracting the heat from the sauce. I liked this, but it had too much heat on it for me, I’m glad we split it because a whole one would have been too much. However, if you like a nice kick of heat go for it!

Seattle Dog: with Creamed Cheese and Caramelized Onions.

Review: This was surprisingly good. The creaminess paired with the caramelized onions was luscious. The caramelized onions still had texture to them, they weren’t cooked down to mush. The only problem was that the hot dog was lost in the toppings on this one. If it was just a bit meatier it would have been perfect. That is just a minor complaint, I will be getting this again for sure!

The Heart Stopper: 1/4 Burger with Taylor Pork Roll.

Review: Oh my, this was delicious. The pork roll is similar to SPAM, but better, it is like a deli meat made of pork with the consistency and flavor of salty ham. They put it on the griddle to crisp it up then top the pork roll with a 1/4 pound burger, American cheese (or you can pick swiss cheese), lettuce, and tomato. The pork roll is the start on this sandwich, but the burger didn’t get lost, it was well seasoned. My only complaint with this sandwich was the amount of sandwich-slippage.

Bottom Up: Bun, Mayo, Pork Roll, Burger, American Cheese, Tomato, Lettuce, Bun.

French Fries Review: The french fries were a thick crinkle cut fry that was fried to perfection. They were nice and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. I think the seasoning was just salt and pepper, but it was the perfect amount of seasoning.

The Barking Dog is a great cheap-eats restaurant that I recommend you give a try.
