As a get together with friends and an early celebratory dinner for me. Some friends and I went to check out a new restaurant in Phoebus, VA – El Diablo Loco Cantina & Tequila Bar. I immediately liked it upon walking in. The atmosphere was busy and crowded, but in a good way. I almost felt like I wasn’t in Hampton, VA. The menu advertises an extensive tequila list. To start the dinner off, my friends and I each had a shot of the house tequila. Then I added a house margarita on the rocks – it was delicious. Not too sweet and just the right kick of tequila.
The food menu was simple offering a variety of Mexican inspired cuisine without being overwhelming. My friends ordered the Salsa Trio with Chips and the Queso and Chips – I found them tasty with only a few nibbles. For my meal I got the Taco Dinner and settled on Pollo (chicken), Carnitas (pulled pork) , and Cameron (shrimp) tacos.
Each had it’s own unique flavor. Ranking them from favorite to least favorite, I think the Cameron, Carnitas and then Pollo. The Cameron taco had a nice refreshing taste, while the Carnitas had a balanced flavor. The Pollo lacked flavor to me and for one who is still embracing spicy food – the jalapenos were a little much for me. I opted for chips and salsa (the chips are so good!) but you also have the option to get beans and rice.
Overall I give it a 4/5 – great food, drinks and atmosphere. I will definitely be going back!
